Description:

Rafina - a port on the coast of East Attica - covers an area of 1900 hectares. Today Rafina is essentially a suburb of Athens. This is a historical area that has been inhabited since prehistoric times: during archaeological excavations, rectangular houses of that era were found here, as well as copper processing workshops.

Rafina was one of the 100 demes established by Cleisthenes, under the name "Arafin", which was given to her by the name of the first ruler of Rafin - Arafina, who was considered one of the 100 heroes of Attica. Archaeological excavations have also brought to light finds relating to the era of Roman rule - buildings, Roman baths, statues.

During the Asia Minor catastrophe of 1922, refugees arrived in Rafina - residents of the city of Triglia, located on the shores of Asia Minor, most of whom reached the shores of their ethnic homeland on the ships of the shipowner from Triglia, Philip Kavunidi. The inhabitants of Triglia settled in Rafina, creating a new settlement called Nea Triglia (New Triglia), in memory of their native land. However, this name never took root. However, there is still a house-museum in the city, preserved to this day since the arrival of refugees after the disaster that overtook the city of Smyrna in Asia Minor (Izmir). The house belonged to one of the refugee families who settled in Rafina during the period of the Asia Minor catastrophe. The house-museum preserves all the furniture and household items of the family that once lived in it.

There are several nice sandy beaches near the port, for example, Kokkino Limanaki, which is located 1.5 km from the port of Rafina. The beach stretches in the bed of a picturesque stream under a spectacular red cliff. It is a quiet and clean place with several fish taverns and a campsite.

It should be noted that the municipality of Rafin includes Kallitehnoupoli - the "city of artists", in which members of the artists' cooperative live. It was built on the eastern side of Mount Penteli, representing a place of incomparable beauty.
