The town has preserved old mansions and estates, in which in the XVII-XVIII centuries. lived aristocrats.

He does not distinguish between seasons, since there is always a skiing season - the resort of Valtournenche. There are pistes of all difficulty levels, but most are red ones. The resort of Valtournenche is so harsh that athletes who are unsteady on their feet have to go down in a gondola lift along the only descent to the city. Mont Blanc and four-thousanders

Little Valle d'Aosta got several of the highest mountains of Western Europe at once. The most famous and highest among them is Mont Blanc (4810 meters). The Matterhorn, familiar to us from the emblem on chocolate bars, which Italy shares with Switzerland, is very picturesque. Another great mountain of the region is Monte Rosa, the second highest Alpine peak. And finally, Gran Paradiso, the only one of the four-thousander mountains, located entirely in Italy.

With such a concentration of peaks, there is something to do here for both rock climbers and lovers of mountain landscapes. By the way, the very concept and movement of mountaineering originated in these mountains, after the first successful ascent of Mont Blanc on August 8, 1786. A few years ago, an updated Sky Way cable car was opened here, along which you can climb to the observation deck to the Helbronner peak at a height of 3466 meters. At the Pavillon du Mont-Frety intermediate station, the highest mountain botanical garden in Europe is planted.

Ski resorts

In Valle d'Aosta, there are several zones that are very different in atmosphere and specifics of skiing, and some of them are international. For example, the slopes of the resort of Cervinia - the highest mountain resort in the region, and Italy as a whole - run along the southern slopes of the Matterhorn. From here, without taking off your skis, you can get to the Swiss Zermatt, which lies on the opposite, northern slope. The season here lasts until May, and skiing on the glacier is possible all year round.

The ski area in Courmayeur is also international, but the resort is connected to the French Chamonix tunnel. Courmayeur is an old aristocratic holiday destination and is often featured on Italian Christmas cards. The town is located at the foot of Mont Blanc and is easily accessible via a direct route from Milan, making it a particularly popular weekend getaway. In addition, there are several gastronomic restaurants, including Petit Royal, included in the Michelin Guide 2016.

Pyla resort is the most budgetary in the region and is focused on family holidays. It is convenient to get here by lift directly from the main city of the region - Aosta. The tracks are mostly wide, with a slight slope, so there are many beginners and children's ski schools.

All the resorts of Valle d'Aosta are compactly located, which is why the so-called ski safaris are popular here, when a new area for skiing is chosen every day. For convenience, you can buy a general subscription.

Monuments of history

The city of Aosta, formerly known as Augusta Pretoria, was built by the Romans in 25 BC. e. Its historical center begins at the well-preserved triumphal arch from the time of Octavian Augustus.

For many centuries, these lands belonged to the Savoy dynasty. More than a hundred medieval castles have survived in the vicinity. The most famous among them is Phoenix, which changed many owners since the 13th century and eventually became a museum of local lore.

It is also worth visiting Sarre Castle, built several centuries later and bought by the first king of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II, who turned it into his hunting residence. The walls of the castle are still decorated with royal trophies - thousands of ibex horns and chamois, which make up ornaments in the form of the coat of arms of the Savoy dynasty.

thermal springs

Local sources rich in iron and silicon were visited by foreigners as early as the 17th century.

The Pre-Saint-Didier Baths at the foot of the Orrido Falls has been the main attraction of the Valle d'Aosta for more than 150 years, hosting all the European aristocracy and members of the Italian royal family. Not so long ago, the complex was restored and reopened after a 30-year break.

Having come to the terms for a couple of hours, you can spend the whole day here unnoticed. Swimming pools, saunas of all kinds, salt caves and relaxation rooms are innumerable. You can only get distracted by natural yogurt with herbal tea, and after sunset, look at the stars from the outdoor pools overlooking the mountain peaks.

There are other thermal springs in Valle d'Aosta, more modestly in the small town of Saint Vincent, which is also known for being home to one of the largest gambling houses in Europe.

Specialties

Valle d'Aosta is known for its cheese-making tradition. Its pride is Fontina cheese, which is made from the milk of local spotted red cows. The cheese has a DOP quality mark, which means that it can only be produced here.

Chestnuts are an important product of local gastronomy. Usually they are served with meat dishes, and they are also made into flour or sweets, which are cooked in honey syrup, or whipped into chestnut cream.

Other typical dishes of the region are soup in Valdostan (named after the region) with beans and pasta, as well as risotto al barolo with red wine and pasta with truffles, popular in neighboring Piedmont.
