need for Speed: Most Wanted is without a doubt the best game in the series. After a long journey of trial and error, the developers finally found the desired "golden mean" between sports and illegal street driving, between racing and tuning, between motors and vinyl stickers. Perhaps, for the first time, all the successful finds that have ever appeared in the games of the series have gathered in one box, and innovations that have not justified themselves have all been left in the past.
At our service is a big city, the streets of which you can drive with impunity (well, or almost with impunity) between competitions. The doors of a car shop are open before us, where you can get everything for money - from a sticker to a turbo engine. In the cabin, 32 cars are waiting in the wings, one more beautiful than the other, and fifteen dashing racers are ready to measure their strength with us, so to speak.
But the main thing is that there is a goal ahead. The writers have worked hard to slowly, slowly, draw us into the plot. Somewhere - to anger, somewhere - to make you smile, someone (we will not point fingers, but this is Razor) - to hate.
And when there is a goal, a beautiful girl is at hand, and the gas pedal is under the foot, there is nothing left but to ... win.
Car handling
The features of driving each car are most easily felt by touch, live during the game: here, as with real cars, here, as in life, there are no unambiguous answers. And, of course, sharing our feelings with you, we cannot do without analogies with the last game in the series: NFS: Underground 2.
The first thing that is felt literally immediately is drifts. They have become noticeably stronger, and even slow four-wheel drive cars start to “lead” in sharp turns. It is especially dangerous when, during a turn, you get hit in the body, even if it is weak - at first you have to make considerable efforts so as not to fly off the track and turn around with the rear bumper in the direction of travel. However, getting used to and adjusting is quite easy, and after half an hour of driving it is not felt.
New: the time dilation mode works in much the same way as nitrogen "gassing" - it accumulates over time and is activated for the time the button is pressed. At the same time, time around begins to flow much more slowly, allowing you to thoughtfully go through a particularly difficult turn.
The second important detail is the feeling of speed. It seems that in Most Wanted the "kilometers" on the speedometer have come into line with the real state of affairs. Here you will no longer see how on the right hand floats slowly flower bed, while our instrument speed is about 60 km/h. No, it's all fair. 100 km / h is fast, 150 is very fast, and at 250 you need to seriously concentrate and follow the road that is rapidly rushing under the wheels.
Car collisions are completely different. A simple trick - to hook the bumper of the car in front to turn it into the nearest fence - no longer works. Nothing will come of contact with the opponent's rear bumper, except for the loss of one's own speed - the law of conservation of momentum has not been canceled here. If it’s not interesting to simply compete with the enemy in speed, you can try another maneuver: gently push him sideways into the oncoming lane, into the forehead of some “civilian” car, like a concrete mixer. Or, alternatively, into a tree, a concrete fence, or some other solid object that he planned to go around in the immediate vicinity of our car. But keep in mind that the physics in the game has become noticeably more honest, and you won’t be able to juggle other people’s cars without the threat of losing speed.
Finally, obstacles. Here they, on the contrary, have become much more “friendly”. Cardboard boxes, poles and road signs, benches and fences are demolished easily and naturally, almost without threatening speed. This is especially noticeable with the posts separating adjacent lanes where it is forbidden to change lanes: it is quite possible to knock them all down without being the last one on the list of riders. However, much depends on the enemy. If you go through the game, competing with computer opponents, really without much regard for such trifles, then a live player, circling even minor obstacles, may urge you to be careful.
Secrets of the big city
Whatever you say, our city is really big. As you progress through the career, previously blocked areas open up, but even in the "initial delivery" it is extensive enough that the various landscapes do not have time to prick the eye.
The city map is available by pressing the [M] key, and the mouse wheel allows you to smoothly scale it. Key points are marked on the map: race venues, police "radar" and special buildings: a store, a car dealership and our shelter. By clicking on any of them, you can turn on the GPS - automatic route calculation system. After that, on the road we will be accompanied by a giant arrow overhead, indicating the direction and warning of turns.
On a note: the theater starts from a hanger, the city from a monument, the dance from the stove, and the path of an illegal race car driver from the Safe House. Here you can instantly move from anywhere on the map, and from here - to the venue of any of the current races or provocations. In addition, all your cars are in the shelter.
It is worth saying a few words about the stores separately. Their range of services has grown exponentially, so everything you might need for any of your machines can be ordered from the same showcase. Paint, body parts, exterior trim or internal mechanisms, in a word, everything except perhaps the cars themselves - then you have to get to a car dealership.
Buying parts not only affects performance, but also opens up the possibility of tuning (Performance Tuning), available in the menu while driving. Tuning, on the one hand, is very simple, on the other hand, incredibly complex. In the sense that changing the parameters using the "sliders" is not difficult, but in order to achieve the desired performance, experience and attention will be required.
Police
Law enforcement officers in the game are not decorations. It is simply impossible not to take them into account, and they will not let you forget about yourself even for a minute. At first, it’s easy enough not to run into them, and when you meet with a patrol car, you can quickly get rid of the pursuer. But the further, the more difficult it will be to do this: it all depends on wanted level (Heat).
We start from the first level: for the sake of order, a randomly encountered cop will start a sluggish pursuit, and in extreme cases, he will call a couple of friends on the radio, but not more seriously. On the second level, instead of striped white and black wrecks, black ones will take to the streets, but also with flashing lights, and the first barriers will appear on your proposed path. The third level is racing sports cars painted in the black and white colors of the police. This is already serious, they are very smart, there are a lot of them, and they do not hold enthusiasm. The fourth level will bring helicopters and spiked ribbons with it, and on the fifth level, our old enemy, Sergeant Cross, will join the chase. Behind him are jeeps driving in pairs, crowds of pursuers and all kinds of barriers. Finally, seventh is jeeps only: this is a special level that you will most likely encounter only on additional tracks.
On a note: a radar at the top of the screen warns you that a police car is spinning nearby. The more often the indicator flashes, the patrol is closer there, and the arrow indicates the approximate direction.
It is important to keep in mind that the police are looking for something, in fact, not you, but your car - after all, it is difficult for them to see the driver through the windshield. It is worth changing the car, and your wanted level will again drop to one, and while the “old” car is in the garage, the hype around it gradually subsides and the level of persecution decreases by itself.
There is a cheaper option - repaint the body in a different color, change stickers and wheels. This will not give a 100% effect, but it will reduce the level by several points.
If you are caught: You can pay off in two ways: with money or with a "quick release ticket". The first way is legal, so the wanted level of the "liberated" car drops to one. The second is illegal, so the police will look for you no less than before. If the car cannot be redeemed, it will be confiscated.
In addition to the most exciting chases, there is one more benefit from the police. Coming into conflict with the law, you increase your rating among the riders. This is something like a “baptism of fire”, a kind of “milestones” on the path of a self-respecting illegal motorist. So, in particular, in order to qualify for another place in blacklisted(see below), it will certainly be necessary to commit a series of daring offenses, a certain number of times having come into conflict with the authorities and getting away with it.
Key events
Speeding (Photo Ticket). This is the only "absentee" conflict that does not require close contact with law enforcement forces. Just enough to speed up. Pass under the camera faster than a certain speed, and - click! Ready.
Prize points (Bounty). For "exploits" on the road, bonus points are awarded. This is something like a reputation in narrow circles or a measure of indignation of the police - take it how you like. By choosing this event, you find yourself on the road in close proximity to the police car and must escape from pursuit, before that, gaining the required number of points in a way convenient for you.
Offenses (Infractions). As with reward points, it all starts with a pursuit. Yes, and all subsequent events will also begin in this way, so we will not further discuss this separately. So, your task: to make a certain number different offenses. Rammed a police car? Wonderful. Have you left the road? Wonderful! Resisted arrest? Broke private property? Exceeding the speed limit? All this will be credited to you - the main thing is not to be on the police list.
State costs (Cost to State). Prosecution of offenders is an expensive undertaking. Broken cars, wasted time, cops involved in the chase... Emotionally alienated accountants painstakingly record all these expenses so that the morning news could read the phrase: "Over the past six months, street racers have caused damage to the state in the amount of ..." That's great. Our task is to ensure that the figure is not less than indicated in the conditions of this event. And, of course, in the end, get away from police retribution.
Barriers (Roadblock). When the wanted level is at least 2, the police will begin to put up barriers on the roads. These are police cars, most likely loaded with sandbags or canisters of mercury (they are noticeably heavier than "mobile" official vehicles). It is not difficult to pass them, the main thing is to accelerate better and not to drive into the side of a standing car. Let's go through the agreed number of obstacles, "lose" the pursuers - and the next "feat" can be considered accomplished.
Ribbons with spikes (Spike Strip). Here you will need a wanted level of at least the fourth, so that the brutal police block your way with special cynicism - installing spiked stripes across the roadway. The essence of the task is to overcome the indicated number of such obstacles.
Damage to police cars (Trade Paint). Literally translated - "exchange of paint." Leaving the persecution, you need to hit at least so many police cars, and in any way - ram, hit the side or completely disable.
Long chase (Pursuit Time). The most difficult thing in this exercise is not to break away from the pursuers too quickly, but also not to get caught, of course. You need to constantly maintain a balance, disabling and blocking the "extra" cars, but not getting carried away - so that they do not inadvertently end. If this suddenly happened - urgently go to the nearest busy intersection, knocking down everything you can reach along the way. Perhaps they will notice.
Pursuit Evasion. No need to waste time, looking at the statistics of the chase, no need to deliberately complicate your life and run into trouble. On the contrary, you need to get rid of the "tail" as quickly as possible. Use Nitro gas, smash cars with flashing lights to smithereens.
We take our feet
The higher the level of harassment, the more difficult it becomes to avoid arrest. At a certain stage, speed alone becomes decidedly not enough, and you have to go to all sorts of tricks to get rid of the annoying signaling "tail".
- barriers. There are special places on the map, marked with a red triangle icon during the chase. These are scaffolding, massive but loosely fixed signs, gas station sheds, water towers and even yachts on props - in a word, everything that is ready to collapse at the slightest touch, cutting off the path of the pursuers. But be careful not to fall into your own trap: if a mountain of collapsing rubbish covers you too, you cannot avoid arrest.
- Timber and car carriers. These are "civilian" vehicles - trucks with trailers, the contents of which will readily roll onto the roadway from a strong blow. You should not expect that this technique will instantly save you from the chase, but it can provide some gain in time. In addition, the gap between the axles is wide enough to pick up the moment and slip there. And then it is gloating to imagine how the artificial intelligence of computer policemen will blush from the effort, trying to repeat our maneuver.
- Shelters. When the police lost sight of you for a while, Evade's "thermometer" crawled to its maximum and the Cooldown stage began, you can slow down at the side of the road and wait until they stop looking for you. But time will fly by much faster if you stop by one of the shelters kindly offered by the developers. On the map they are indicated by dotted circles.
- Inaccessible places. This, of course, is more of an unforeseen possibility than a planned detail of the map, but ... There are places where the police cannot reach. For example, a well-known place at the bus station a minute from the Safe House to the southeast, where it is easy to go to the roof or enter the buses standing in a row.
Competition
Of course, the police are not limited to everything. Whatever Sergeant Cross imagines, the position on the “black list” will be determined by competitions between riders. Since NFSU2 list possible ways measure strength has changed somewhat, although the basic versions of the rules have remained unchanged. So:
Ring track (Circuit). Classic. A closed track where you have to drive several laps, competing with opponents only in speed. The tooltip displays the number of laps completed out of the total number of laps.
Sprint. Also a classic. It differs from the ring only in the absence of a “ring”, that is, it is passed once from end to end, from start to finish. In the hint, you will constantly see the exact percentage of the road left behind.
Acceleration (Drag). Relatively straight track, which is passed on a manual gearbox. The point is to change gears in time to reach the highest speed and finish first. Any collision results in an automatic elimination from the race. It is important to keep in mind that turning the steering wheel (or the left / right keys) here does not turn the front wheels, but gives the command “to change lanes to the left / right”.
Elimination Race (Lap Knockout). A complicated version of Circuit. Not only do you need to finish first, you also have to not be last by the end of each lap. The rider who completes the lap in the tail is eliminated from the competition. Accordingly, the number of circles is always equal to the number of participants, so that only one remains at the end.
Single race (Tollbooth). We don't have a clear competitor here. Instead, there are checkpoints located on the track with some gaps, as well as a timer that inexorably counts down the remaining time. Passing through the checkpoint adds extra time, which should be enough to get to the next one. And so - to the end of the track.
Exceeding the speed (Speedtrap). On the way of the racing procession, there are automatic cameras that record the speed of passing cars. The winner is the one whose sum of the speeds recorded by the cameras will be greater. But that's not all. Until the racer reaches the finish line, he is regularly penalized for delay, so you should not relax in the intervals between the “checkpoints”.
If you are going to participate in the race, pay attention to such a parameter of the route as the probability of meeting with the police (Cop Probability). Not that it should be avoided at all, just be prepared that if you "reel" the cops in the course of the competition, at the end of it you will have to get rid of them.
If police involvement is almost inevitable, try this trick: let the enemy go a little ahead and follow. The patrol will start chasing the leader, not paying the slightest attention to us. That's when you can already enter the game at full strength, overtake this howling procession and fly at full speed to the finish line.
Blacklist promotion
The list of the most wanted riders in the game takes the place that in the detective novel about the stolen diamond is assigned to this very diamond. In other words, everything revolves around him. He (the list) lives in the main computer of the city's police department, but cunning hackers from among all the same speed lovers climb this database as if they were their own My Documents folder. For this is the only documented and objective rating, a table of ranks and a universal criterion. After all, the one whom the police are looking for in the very first place, of course, is head and shoulders above all the rest - those whom she "just pursues."
But nothing comes for free. In order to oust the offender who has entrenched himself there from his cherished position, it is necessary, not in word, but in deed, to prove that his track record is a mere trifle compared to the lawlessness that you are capable of inflicting. And, of course, to overtake the opponent in comfortable conditions for him.
So, the blacklist promotion algorithm looks like this. To get the right to fight with the next racer, you need to win several “simple” competitions (Race Events) with unknown motorists, complete a predetermined number of provocations (Milestone Events) and score the specified number of points (Bounty). Finally, having fulfilled these conditions and received an invitation from the opponent, deal with him, cross him off the list and move up a step.
It is important: the winners, as you know, are given laurels and trophies. Nobody promises us Lavrov, but there are trophies. After each defeated defendant of the “black list”, you can choose a reward by turning over several yellow tokens. “Under the lid” may be a coupon for free travel from the police station to the street, a unique detail, or even the personal car of the loser.
