How to add a new font to windows 10. Ways to install fonts in Windows. Fixing an anti-aliasing issue

Greetings to all readers of my blog, today I will tell and show where the fonts are in Windows 10. This can be useful if they are incorrectly reflected in some programs, and also if you want to see what is already installed in your operating system.

The vast majority of programs available in the operating system use fonts that have already been installed in it. However, sometimes it becomes necessary to install a new one or check what is already installed. This situation is known to all active users of Adobe's Photoshop program. Very often, when you open templates or files that were not created on your computer, the application's information window pops up. As a rule, it says that the program cannot find this or that font, and then we need to install a new one.

In some situations, you know in advance which font is required and you just need to check if it is installed on your computer, since a great many fonts are not standard, and as a rule they have to be downloaded and installed separately. And sometimes you need to choose a beautiful option for design, and see how it looks, and then we also need the Fonts folder. Don't worry, I'll show you where to look.

detailed instructions

  • We start by opening the Start menu, where we need to find the line Control Panel, as shown in the screenshot.
  • A standard Explorer window will appear in front of us, in which we look for the Category button in the upper right part, then click on it once with the left mouse button.

  • After that, the settings menu will open, where you need to select the line Small icons, as shown in the screenshot. To do this, just click once with the left mouse button on the desired line.

  • After that, the window will be updated again, and in it we need to find the Fonts folder. We find and open it.

  • Right here, as shown in the screenshot, are all the fonts that were installed in your operating system. Each of them has a unique name, which is located under the font icon. The icons you see show the graphic rendering of a particular version of the font, so you can easily choose the one you like right here.

Additional Information

On the one hand, the use of small print makes it possible to use the workspace as ergonomically as possible. Indeed, on the same graphic display area in front of you there will be much more information, but I ask you not to sleep in pursuit of space savings and large information flows. First of all, because small print is dangerous for your health, in particular for your eyesight. The retina of the eye is very sensitive to radiation from a computer monitor. Therefore, in order not to overload it, you first need to choose a font of a size that will be comfortable for your eyes. Experiment with the size and focus on how it feels, once you feel that the eye area is relaxed and you don't have to squint, then this is the font size you need. If it seems to you that this is all too complicated, then there is a simple alternative. You can try changing the screen resolution, the most important thing here is to remember that the screen refresh rate must be at least 60 Hz. It is this value that is completely safe for the retina of your eyes, which is a clinically proven statement.

If you have any difficulties or questions related to where the fonts are in Windows 10 - write them in the comments, we will discuss.

In some cases, the user needs to change the default font to another or install a new one. There may be several reasons for this. Perhaps you like the other one more and it is more convenient to read it, or the program does not work with the standard ones, in which case you have to install additional ones.

There are several types of fonts:

  • The first one is true type. It can be set to absolutely any size, while it will not lose clarity and display quality, and they are also easily printed using system devices.
  • open type– Supports rotation and scaling while maintaining display clarity. It can also be printed using standard utilities.
  • Technology clear type designed to display text on LCD screens, where they look much better.
  • postscript- Developed by Adobe Systems. They are of high quality and detail.

It is worth noting that these instructions for installing fonts are relevant for Windows 7, 8, 10.

Where are the fonts and how to find them

There are several ways to find the currently installed fonts on a device. The first method involves direct action through the conductor. To enter the directory, the user will need to follow the path C:\Windows\Fonts, this folder will contain files with all installed flavors. To avoid looking for the directory yourself, you can press win + r and type %windir%\fonts in the window that opens.

The second method involves using control panels. In this case, you need to run it through the start, after which it remains to find the Fonts section.

You can also just enter the desired name in the search bar, then open the found directory.

Installation procedure

Here are some of the easiest and most effective ways to install fonts.

The first method will require the user to navigate to the downloaded file and right-click on it. Next, click on the line Install, which will be available in the pop-up context menu.

In the second method, the user will need to get into font folder, several ways to do this have been described in the previous section. Next, you need to click on the File menu item and select the section Install font. In the window that opens, specify the path to the downloaded file.

The third way involves a simple drag and drop uploaded file to the standard folder.

Installing fonts by shortcut

If the user has little space on the system disk, and there is a need to install new fonts, then they can be installed as shortcuts. To do this, you will have to do several steps. To get started, the user will need to log in through control Panel to the desired utility. Then, on the left side of the menu that opens, select Options.

In this menu, check the box that allows setting as shortcuts.

Now, after clicking on the downloaded file, an additional line will appear in its menu, which will allow you to install the windows font as a shortcut.
In this case, the downloaded data will not be copied to the standard folder, however, if the original file is moved to another location, the font will become unavailable and will have to be installed again.

How to remove or hide a font

To remove or hide a font, just go to the folder where they are all stored. After that, you can right-click on the unwanted file and click " Delete". This will completely erase the file from the system. If the user wants some of them to simply become unavailable, then you can select the item " Hide”, which will keep them on the device, but make them inaccessible in editors.

Do not forget that there are several elements without which the system will not be able to work or will fail. Here is a list of files that should never be deleted:

  • Courier New
  • Arial(including options: Bold, Italic, Bold Italic);
  • Times New Roman(including options: Bold, Italic, Bold Italic);
  • symbol;
  • Wingdings;
  • MS Serif;
  • MS Sans Serif.

How to install a custom font

If the file has a non-standard extension or type, then the system may swear at it. In this case, it is still worth trying to install it, but if this fails, then it will remain download data in a format that the system understands.

It is also possible to use one of the online programs for file type conversions, which are now available on the Internet, you should search for "ps to ttf", simply putting your file extension instead of the first paragraph. After that, you can try to install the converted file.

What to do if the font is not installed

About what to do if the system swears that the file is not a font file, it is written in the previous section. It is worth using a converter or downloading it from another place. However, there is one more nuance. For users, dozens of even known working files may not be installed if disabled built-in firewall. If you activate it, then the information is installed perfectly, this method should be tried by all windows 10 users if the installation fails.

Windows 10 has many built-in fonts. Like its predecessors, the system also makes it easy to view, install, and remove fonts.

When using Windows 10, you may need to access font settings to view, install, and uninstall. In this guide, we will learn where the system stores fonts and how to install and uninstall them in Windows 10.

You can view all available fonts, as well as install and uninstall them, in the application. You can access the settings for a specific font from this same page. Use the search box in the section "Available Fonts" to find the desired font you want to access.

All installed fonts are stored in the folder C:\Windows\Fonts.

Step 1: Open page "Fonts", by going to "Options" and selecting the settings group "Personalization" → "Fonts".

Step 2: Click on a font to open the details. In field "Enter data to preview fonts" enter any word to see how it will look.

Windows 10 now has the ability to install fonts from the official Store. Although the Store has a limited number of fonts, the font collection is expected to increase in the future.

To install a font from the Store:

In the Microsoft store itself, you can see the first available fonts, but with current versions of Windows 10. You just need to search for the store "font". You will then see all the fonts currently available.

Step 1: Go to page

Step 3: In the font gallery, double-click on a font's icon to open its page.

Step 4: Finally click the button "Get" to download and install the font.

The installed font will appear on the Fonts page in the Settings app. If there is an update for the font, you can install it immediately using the Windows 10 Store.

Fonts currently available in the Microsoft Store:

  • Arial Nova
  • Convection
  • Rockwell Nova
  • Gill Sans Nova
  • Verdana Pro
  • Georgia Pro
  • Ink Draft
  • Ink Journal
  • Convection
  • PT Root UI

In addition to the fonts available in the Store, you can also install hundreds of beautiful fonts available online. For example, you can download and install Google Fonts on Windows 10.

To install a third party font:

Step 1: Download the font to your computer. Extract it if it is in a ZIP archive.

Step 2: Go to page "Settings" → "Personalization" → "Fonts". Drag the new font file into the area "Adding Fonts" → "Drag and Drop Install" to install a third party font.

Alternatively, you can right-click on the font file in File Explorer and select the option "Install".

Delete Font in Windows 10

Step 1: First of all, go to the page "Settings" → "Personalization" → "Fonts".

Step 2: Click on the font you want to remove to open the information page.

Step 3: Scroll down the page to see the Delete button. Click on the button " Delete". In the confirmation dialog, click the Delete button again to remove the font from your computer.

All computers running Windows 10 use the same standard fonts. They can be used in all built-in and third-party programs. But sometimes there is a need for additional fonts that are not included in the built-in set. In this case, you will have to resort to manual installation.

View a list of installed fonts in Windows 10

If you want to know which fonts are already on your system, follow the steps below:

  1. Using the system search bar, find the built-in Settings program and open it. Opening computer settings
  2. Go to the "Personalization" block.
    Open the "Personalization" block
  3. Expand the "Fonts" sub-item. You will see a list of already downloaded fonts. Study it before looking for and installing third-party fonts. Perhaps one of them will appeal to you, and the need for additional actions will disappear.
In the sub-item "Fonts" you can see and configure all fonts

The presence of special fonts is most often needed for programs such as Photoshop, Word and other photo, video and text editors.

Installing additional fonts

If you decide that you need a new font, use any of the methods below. It doesn't matter which one you choose, the result will be the same - the list of fonts in the computer's memory will be replenished.

With the help of the official store

Windows 10 has its own store, including fonts for the system.

  1. Once in the "Fonts" sub-item of the "Personalization" block (how to proceed to this section is described in the "View a list of installed fonts" item), click on the "Get additional fonts" line.
Click on the line "Get additional fonts"
  2. A list of available fonts will open. Explore it and choose the option that you like best.
    Choosing the right font
  3. After going to one of the offered products, click on the "Get" button (or "Buy" if the font is paid) and wait for the installation to complete. After the process is over, the new font will be added.
    Click the "Buy" button

With the help of a file

Not all existing fonts are available in the official Microsoft store. Most of them are hosted on third-party sites in a free or paid form. Windows 10 can work with two formats containing fonts: ttf and otf.

At the end of the process, you will receive a new font in your computer's memory.

Using a special folder

Windows has a special folder that contains all the fonts and allows you to manage them. You can go to it along the path C:\Windows\Fonts. To add a font, drag or copy the ttf or otf file to this folder. After the file is placed, it will automatically be added to the list of other fonts.

Using a third party program

A large number of third-party programs have been developed to work with fonts. Some of them can work not only with standard formats, but also with extensions that Windows does not read.

It is worth resorting to using third-party applications if you are going to sort through a lot of fonts, since doing this with standard system tools is not very convenient.

FontMassive Light

This application can display a list of found fonts, as well as each character from the set. It can be used to remove and install packages. In addition to the standard formats, FontMassive supports the .pfm and .pfb extensions.

The program can compare fonts, search for similar ones, convert them to the format for Adobe Illustrator and does not require installation. You can download its free version for 32 and 64-bit systems from the official website of the developer.

Working with fonts is more convenient in FontMassive Light

Font Forge

This application is suitable for those who want to not only install other people's fonts, but also create their own. Using the built-in tools of the program, you can draw, save and add your own font to the system. FontForge has a huge number of features that allow you to work out each character in detail. You can download the utility from the official website of the developers.

Installing PostScript Type 1 Fonts

PostScript is a special programming language developed by Adobe. It is often used in the description of PDF files and for storing and describing fonts. PostScript Type 1 is the worldwide accepted encoding format.

To install fonts of this format, you will need a special program from Adobe - Adobe Type Manager. After downloading and opening it, go to the Add Fonts tab, specify the path to the font file and use the Add button. Done, the new font has been added to your library.

Specify the path to the font and click the Add button

Fonts take up very little memory, so deleting them won't help free up hard drive space. But, if you want to clean up the list of available fonts, leaving only those options that you constantly use, you can erase unnecessary fonts. You can do this with almost all the methods described above: through computer settings, a special folder, and a third-party program.

It doesn't matter which method you choose, the only thing you need to do is select a font and click the "Delete" button. For example, you can navigate to the C:\Windows\Fonts folder, highlight the appropriate item, and click the Delete button. After confirming the action, the font will be permanently erased.

Select a font and click the "Delete" button

There are several ways to add a new font to the system library. You can perform a quick installation from a file, use the Fonts folder, or use a third-party program. The list of fonts used can also be seen in the computer settings. Removing a font is done through the Fonts folder, a third-party program, or system settings.

The built-in fonts in Windows 10 may sometimes not be enough to work. For example, if a person often works with documents that require specific design, or edits images. In this case, it becomes necessary to apply custom fonts downloaded from the Internet. But first you need to install them.

Where are fonts stored in Windows 10

Fonts in Windows 10 are located in a special system folder along the path C:\Windows\Fonts. You can get there both through "My Computer" and using the control panel: to view the fonts, open "Start - Control Panel - Fonts".

In the control panel menu there is a tab "Fonts", which is needed to get to the fonts

Whichever way you open the list of fonts, it will look the same. Here you can see how the font looks like by double-clicking on it, you can configure its parameters, or you can delete the font (to do this, right-click on it and select "Delete"). But most often they go into the repository to check if the required font is installed on the system.

In the font menu, you can view the font, its parameters, configure it or delete it

So if you're not sure if a font is on your system, just check your system storage. It is better not to trust text editors: the font can be hidden from them by settings.

Installing a font in Windows 10

There is no "Add Font" button in the font store.

This does not mean at all that adding fonts is disabled programmatically: it just does not have to be pressed by individual buttons or even go to the font store.

To install a font, you first need to download it. Most often, good collections are found on sites for artists and people working with graphics processing. A font downloaded from the web is a .ttf file (there are others), sometimes packaged in an archive.

The downloaded font is a file, most often in TTF format, that needs to be installed on the system

We list 2 ways to install the font:

We figured out the ttf extension. In addition to it, there are other formats, including the so-called PostScript Type 1 fonts. These are different from the TrueType fonts accepted in Windows, and the installation process for them can be difficult for a user unfamiliar with the features. Type 1 is rare, but if you already met, you will have to learn how to install it.

A PostScript font is not a single file, but a combination of several. Usually this is a bundle of two .pfb and .pfm files, but there is also a variant with three: .pfb, .afm and .inf, as well as four: .pfb, .pfm, .afm and .inf. If at least one of the required files is missing, the font will not be installed.

A PostScript font is a series of related files in different formats.

In earlier versions of Windows, these fonts were installed through third-party programs. Now they are installed in exactly the same way as all the others, with one exception: since there are several files, you need to select only .pfm for installation. It differs from the rest in that the description says "Type 1 Font File" or Type 1 Font File.

To install the Type 1 font, you need to right-click on the PFM file and select "Install"

Note that due to the rarity of the format, not every editor sees PostScript fonts. This happens quite often, so if suddenly the program does not see the desired font, this is completely normal.

Installing fonts without administrator rights

Administrator rights are required to install the font on the system. Without rights, only at the user level, you won't do anything.

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to work in the system without administrator rights, but there are some pitfalls here too. To allow a user to install fonts using Windows tools, administrator rights are required.

There is only one way out: use third-party programs. For example, a free utility called PortableApps.com Platform. Although it is intended for other purposes, it has managed to prove itself in the matter of installing fonts with user rights. And you don't need administrator rights to install it. The plan should be:

Setting up system fonts

The font can not only be installed or removed, but also customized. And now we are not talking about changing the parameters in graphic or video editors, where you can change the text size as you like, but about setting fonts directly in the Windows system. Of course, there will not be such a range of parameters as in Photoshop: these settings are aimed at something else.

  1. In the font menu, which we already talked about above, there is an item "Font Options". He is responsible for setting up a particular font. There are few parameters themselves: only two. One of them is responsible for hiding the font where it is not supported. If this item is enabled, then programs will not show fonts that they cannot display. The second parameter allows you to set the font through its shortcut. And it's all. No riot of colors, as in Photoshop.
In the font options menu, you can hide a font that is not supported and allow the font to be installed via a shortcut
  2. “Font Options” is only the first item, and the customization options have not yet been exhausted. Further, we will no longer talk about setting the fonts installed in the system, but about the Windows system texts that display the names of folders, system messages and other texts. The first thing you can do with them is enable the ClearType setting. This is done through the appropriate font menu item. After that, the settings window should open.

To configure the system responsible for text smoothing, you need to click "Next"
  3. ClearType is a text smoothing technology that makes letters on the screen more readable. During the setup process, the system utility will ask you several times to choose the most pleasing to the eye from a series of pictures with text. Based on the results of the answers, the technology will change its settings so that your eyes are comfortable working with the text.
During setup, the utility will ask you several times to select the most readable text example.
  4. The third possibility, which stores the font menu, is the adjustment of the size of the letters. This is useful for visually impaired people or just those who like to sit away from the monitor. It is located in the same menu, the item "Change font size". Here you can choose what type of text you want to change (for example, headings or menu items), the size that will be assigned to this type. In addition, the font can be made bold.
To change the size of system texts, you need to select the type and size of the font in the corresponding menu
  5. And finally, the last item of the fonts menu is "Manage additional components". Clicking on this button opens the Windows 10 settings window, where all previously installed components will be listed: for example, spell check or voice playback of text from the screen. Part of the points - n settings of Microsoft's AI companion called Cortana, and they are not fully implemented in the Russian-language version of Windows. So don't be surprised if you haven't heard of these features until today: they may not be available to you. The additional features settings window lists the components that are installed in the system
  6. You can also add new components here, but for the reasons mentioned above, this item is almost useless. Well, unless you want Cortana to speak Chinese on your computer. If you use the English version of Windows, then the voice assistant will work fine.
If you suddenly need advanced features for other language packs, you can always download them in "Adding a Component"

These settings, of course, will not allow you to decorate the system font with beautiful curls, but they can help in a number of situations.

"Windows 10 font is not the correct font" error

Often, users complain about the “File is not a valid Windows 10 font” error that occurs when trying to install a font. It occurs for various reasons, in particular, related to the bug of the system itself. So, the possible causes of the error are:

  • "broken" font file. In this case, it is recommended to download it again from another source;
  • the font is not supported by Windows (although this option is very rare and unlikely). If this happens, use an online font converter to convert it to the correct format (preferably .ttf or .otf);
  • you do not have administrator rights. To install the font, either log in with permissions or use the method described above;
  • you have Windows Firewall or System Security disabled. It is still unknown how these two services are related to font installation, but the fact remains that if they are disabled, font installation may stop working.

To enable the firewall and system security service:

Installing fonts in Windows 10 is a simple matter if you have administrator rights, a working font, and an enabled firewall. However, do not get carried away: a custom font may contain a virus that can easily penetrate deep into Windows by installing it in the system folder. Be careful and download fonts only from trusted sources.
