It's been a long time since I've posted in the For Beginners section, so I think I'll stop rambling. After thinking a little about the subject of the article, I decided to write about ways to enter the Windows Registry Editor. Although I write in each of the articles how to enter the registry. I'd rather write everything possible ways available on Windows operating systems by default. So what is a registry?

The Windows registry is a database containing all the settings and parameters necessary for the operation of the operating system. It contains settings for both hardware and software. Most of the changes in the control panel, editor group policies and additional system settings are written to the registry.

So, how do you enter the Windows Registry Editor?

Logging in through the Run utility

It is this method that I use in my articles, since, in my opinion, it is the fastest and most convenient. We perform three simple steps.

Through the search in the start menu

To begin with, let's look at the example of Windows 7, since it has an old version of the Start menu and this option is suitable for older operating systems.

For Windows 7, Vista and earlier

For Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

Opening via Windows Explorer

A very simple way: you just need to find the desired file in the system folder. To do this, we follow the path:C:\windows. We are looking for a file and run it.

This question has been asked to me more than once, although in many articles I talked about it. In order not to throw off the link to the article every time, where in the middle or at the end you can read about opening the registry, I decided to make a step-by-step guide. From the title of the article, you probably already guessed that we will talk about how to open the registry in Windows 7 and Windows 8.

First, let's say what it is. The registry is a kind of database of settings that contains many settings for all applications, it also contains all the settings for your Windows.

Windows 7

How to open Registry Editor in Windows 7? Opening the registry in Windows 7 is not as difficult as it seems. The simplest and fast way for novice users, use the search in the Start menu. Having opened this menu and enter regedit in the search bar, feel free to click on the program that appears. This is the registry editor.

There is a longer way to open it. Go to C:\Windows\ , in this folder open the regedit.exe file.

Very important. Now you understand how to open the registry, but if you are a novice user, then you need to make a backup copy before you make changes to the registry! If you change something incorrectly or delete something, then the next time you turn on Windows, it may not boot. Therefore, you need to be extremely careful not to get into an awkward situation. If you found some instructions on the Internet in which you are advised to change something in the registry, then follow these instructions.

If you are a Windows 7 user, then read the article to the end. A little lower I will tell you how I open the registry.

Windows 8

Now let's figure out how to open the registry in Windows 8. Opening the registry in Windows 8 is similar to Windows 7, but since there is no Start button in Windows 8 (unless you installed it yourself), there are slight differences. The fastest way, which works on both systems, is to use hotkeys. But since many users do not use them, I have described more primitive methods for beginners above. But I recommend to everyone the method that I will tell below. By the way, it also works in Windows XP and Windows 7.

Press "Win" + "R", this key combination will bring up the "Run" window, type regedit into it, press Enter and that's it, the registry is open.

In the screenshot below you can see what the registry looks like:

If you need the registry to clean it from unnecessary keys, then there are programs for removing unnecessary keys for this, the most common CCleaner.

Watch a video on how to open the registry:

The registry is literally the foundation of the Windows family of operating systems. This array contains data that defines all global and local settings for each user and for the system as a whole, regulates privileges, has information about the location of all data, extensions and their registration. For easy access to the registry, Microsoft developers have provided a handy tool called Regedit (Registry Edit).

This system program represents the entire registry in a tree structure, where each key is located in a strictly defined folder and has a static address. Regedit can search for a specific entry throughout the registry, edit existing ones, create new ones, or delete ones that an advanced user no longer needs.

Like any program on the computer, regedit has its own executable file, when launched, the Registry Editor window itself appears. You can access it in three ways. However, you need to make sure that the user who decides to make changes to the registry has or is an administrator - ordinary privileges are not enough to edit settings at such a high level.

Method 1: Using the Start Menu Search

Method 2: Using File Explorer to Directly Access the Executable

Method 3: Using a Special Keyboard Shortcut

Be extremely careful when making any changes to the registry. One wrong action can lead to a complete destabilization of the operating system or a partial disruption of its performance. Be sure to back up the registry before changing, creating, or deleting keys.
