Basic concepts
Drivers are designed so that the OS can freely interact with all components of the computer, whether it be a printer, monitor, video card or other device.
Windows includes many drivers used to initially install and run the OS. Initially, they are simple or outdated, which means they may not always function correctly. Your Internet may not work, sound may not be played, or the correct one may not be installed. Therefore, after installing the system, you need to check the availability and relevance of drivers.
Installing the driver from the manufacturer's disc
When purchasing devices in the box with them, you can find ready-made discs on which the software (software) is recorded. It is enough to insert the disc into the drive and wait for the installation menu to appear, or choose how to start the disc in autorun. Another way is to open the disk in, find a file in * .exe format with the name Setup or similar.
Next, you just need to select the desired driver and, after downloading it, restart the computer. It is recommended to install only necessary programs, as extra drivers can slow down the computer. That is, choose only the latest software versions from the right manufacturer.
If the disk was not included with the equipment or the version of the program on it is outdated, then it is better to download the driver from the official website of the device manufacturer. Each of them provides the ability to download the latest version that is relevant for the device.
For this you will need internet access. It is better to take care of the driver for the network card or Wi-Fi adapter in advance so that you can later connect to the site. For USB-modems, the program is installed automatically when connected to a PC.
So, we look at the manufacturer of the equipment whose driver we need, and go to their official website (For example, www.nvidia.ru, www.asus.com/ru, http://www.gigabyte.ru, www.intel.ru and others). We find the section "Service", "Support", "Programs", "Drivers" or the like. In the search, we enter the exact model of the equipment (you can find the name on the box).
After the driver for the desired model is found, select Windows version and its capacity and download the program.
Some manufacturers offer automatic search, which allows you to find the correct version of the software without knowing its name and version of your OS.
After downloading, run the *.exe file. If you downloaded a folder without an executable file, then the installation is carried out through the device manager.
The Device Manager will help when the software is already on the HDD or USB flash drive, but it does not provide an *.exe file.

In the window " Device Manager» you can find all the hardware available for Windows. If any of them do not have a driver or it is installed incorrectly, then an exclamation mark is lit next to it.
Click on the title with the right mouse button - " Properties» – « General» — « Update Driver" or " Driver» – « Refresh". Next, the computer will prompt us " " or " Search this computer».
Select manual installation mode. In the new window, click Review" and find the folder in which the required driver is located.
Press " OK” and wait for the installation process to complete. Upon successful download, you will receive a notification that the installation is complete. We close the window and see that the exclamation mark next to the device has disappeared - the software has been updated.
If you do not have the required file, then the option " Automatic search for updated drivers". In this case, Windows tries to find the software itself on disks or on the Internet. However, this option is not the most reliable, so we leave it as a last resort.
If the connected device is not recognized by Windows and you are not able to install the software using the methods discussed above, then you can find the driver by the component ID. To do this, go back to Device Manager"- find an uninstalled driver - open its parameter" Properties" - chapter " Intelligence” – in the drop-down list we find “ Hardware ID» – select the first value and copy it.
Open the DevID.info website and enter the identification value in the search box. Click " Search».
If the service finds the necessary software for the equipment, then information about the driver and the download icon in the form of a floppy disk appear at the bottom of the page. On the new page, click on the original file - click on the name again - select the desired folder to save - " Save"- install the downloaded file.

Usually, when buying a laptop or computer in assembly, they come with a disk with the necessary drivers and utilities. The laptop comes with one disk with all the drivers, the computer separately; usually these are drivers for the chipset, video card, sound card driver, lan..etc. Everything is simple here, install the disk and run the installation of the necessary drivers.

Download drivers from the official website of the manufacturer
Consider the example of the Asus K42f laptop. We go to the official website of Asus and in the search we set this model. Select the tab → download and specify your operating system(you can find out the system by going to the address → My Computer → (pkm) → Properties).
We are looking for all the necessary drivers. The most important drivers are Chipset, Sound, VGA, LAN (network), etc. If this method did not help, use the next, third method.
Search for a driver by device code.
Let's go back to Device Manager. Computer → PCM → Properties. Let's say we do not have an audio controller driver .. see the figure.
Right-click on it and select → Properties. In the open window, select the "Details" tab, and in the drop-down menu you need to select → " Hardware ID” (in Windows XP “ Device Instance ID»).

Automatic driver installation
You downloaded the driver from the site, it can be either in the form of an arj, zip, rar archive (simple archive), or as a single file with the exe extension (self-extracting archive). A self-extracting archive (example installdriver.exe) is a startup file that already stores compressed files that do not require third party programs to unpack, you just need to run it, point to an empty folder you created on your disk in advance, and the archive itself will unzip the drivers there.
A simple arj, zip or rar archive - in this case, you also need to create an empty folder on the disk in advance and unzip all the files from the archive there, just unzip and not just run the archive, the fact is that often many novice users, having downloaded the archive, just open it through "Start" or "Run", while the archiver program simply shows the contents of the archive as a list of files and any attempts to run something from the archive will result in an error, so remember that the first thing you need to do is unpack the archive into an empty one you created separately folder, for this, in the archiver program (for example, WinRar) there is a button "Extract to the specified folder" or "Extract to" after which you simply indicate where to unpack the archive and wait for unpacking.

The device model will be displayed in the command line window. If you do not recognize it, then you will not be able to understand what drivers are needed for the equipment to work correctly.
When downloading from the official site, one more condition is required - Internet access is required. If after Windows installation the system lacks the software of the network card and the Wi-Fi module, then you will have to download the drivers on another computer or install them from a disk.
The site may not have drivers for all devices - this also happens. But this does not mean that they are not needed, because they do not have to be installed. It's just that some drivers don't have a version for Windows 10. 
Therefore, for example, if Windows 8 was originally installed on the laptop, then you first need to open the page with drivers for Windows 8 and install them all. Then you can already go to the Windows 10 page and see what updates are available - usually there are not many of them.
Driver installation
If you downloaded software for a laptop, then it is also important to install it correctly, following a certain order. But before installing the software, create a restore point. If something goes wrong after adding the drivers, you can quickly roll back the system back to a healthy state.
- Windows updates.
- Chipset.
- Disk controller.
- Integrated video card.
- Discrete graphics adapter.
- Sound card.
- Network Card.
- WiFi module.
- Bluetooth adapter.
- USB controller.
- Card reader.
- Webcam.

Automatic and manual search
If downloading drivers from the official site seems too complicated, then try installing the drivers through the device manager from a disk or from a folder. With this built-in tool, you can find out exactly what drivers are needed, and then install them from a disk or download from the Internet. 
The order is no longer so important here - just look at which device is marked with an exclamation mark. This designation indicates that the equipment needs to be installed or updated. How to carry out such an operation correctly:
If you run an automatic search, then Windows will try to find out which drivers are needed on its own, and then download and install the necessary software. When choosing manual search, you can specify the specific location where the drivers are stored. This method, for example, allows you to install the device software from a disk, if available. 
In addition, some driver versions downloaded from the manufacturer's website may not have an executable file. To install such software, you will also have to use a manual search through the device manager. You just need to specify the folder in which the drivers are located in order to start their installation.
Application DriverPack Solution
If you do not have the opportunity to access the Internet from a laptop, automatic search does not lead to anything, and there is no disk with equipment software, then use the DriverPack Solution program. This is a universal driver package that itself finds out what software the laptop needs, and then installs it from its base.
DriverPack Solution does not always accurately determine the type of hardware and may supply the wrong software, but if you need to install a lot of drivers, then this is the best option. Errors, if they occur, can be quickly corrected by manually updating the software through the device manager. 
After starting, DriverPack Solution tries to find out the models of devices installed on the laptop. When the scan is completed, a list of drivers that need to be installed appears. A couple of recommendations for using the program:
- Turn on expert mode.
- Do not install all drivers at once, install them one by one.
- Clean up the startup list after using the program by disabling the application for automatic update drivers.
- Don't forget to check the functionality of the equipment.
If a device is not working, reinstall its drivers using one of the methods listed above. In any case, the priority will be to download the software from the official site, but an automatic search through the device manager is also suitable.
Probably everyone who at least once reinstalled the operating system on their own had a popular question: how to find out which drivers need to be installed on the computer for its stable operation? This is the question we will try to answer in this article. Let's understand in more detail.
In theory, you need to install software for all devices that require it on a computer or laptop. Over time, operating system developers are constantly expanding the Microsoft driver base. And if in the days of Windows XP you had to manually install almost all the drivers, then in the case of newer operating systems, many drivers are already installed automatically. However, there are devices for which software has to be installed manually. We bring to your attention a number of ways that will help you in solving this issue.
Method 1: Official websites of manufacturers
In order to install all the necessary drivers, you need to install the software for all boards in your computer. This refers to the motherboard, video card and external boards (network adapters, sound cards, and so on). At the same time, in "Device Manager" it may not indicate that the hardware requires drivers. When installing the operating system, the standard software for the device was simply used. However, software for such devices must be installed original. Most of the installed software falls on the motherboard and the chips integrated into it. Therefore, first we will look for all drivers for motherboard, and then for the video card.
- Find out the manufacturer and model of the motherboard. To do this, press the keys Win+R on the keyboard and in the window that opens, enter the command cmd to open a command line.
- AT command line you need to enter the commands one by one:
wmic baseboard get Manufacturer
wmic baseboard get product
Don't forget to press "Enter" after each command is entered. As a result, you will see on the screen the manufacturer and model of your motherboard. - Now we are looking for the manufacturer's website on the Internet and go to it. In our case, this is .
- On the site, we look for a search field or the corresponding button in the form of a magnifying glass. As a rule, by clicking on this button you will see a search field. In this field, you must enter the model of the motherboard and click "Enter".
- On the next page, you will see the search result. You must select your motherboard from the list. Usually, there are several subsections under the name of the board model. If there is a section "Drivers" or "Downloads", click on the name of such a section and go to it.
- In some cases, the following page may be divided into software subsections. If so, then look for and select a subsection "Drivers".
- The next step is to select the operating system and bit depth from the drop-down list. Please note that in some cases there may be differences in the lists of drivers when choosing different OS. Therefore, view not only the system that you have installed, but also the versions below.
- After selecting the OS, you will see a list of all the software that your motherboard needs to interact with other computer components. You need to download and install them all. The download occurs automatically after clicking on the button, Download or the corresponding icon. If you downloaded the archive with the drivers, then before installing, be sure to extract all its contents into one separate folder. After that, install the software.
- After you install all the software for your motherboard, let's move on to the video card.
- Press the key combination again Win+R and in the window that appears, enter the command "dxdiag". Click to continue "Enter" or button "OK" in the same window.
- In the diagnostic tool window that opens, go to the tab "Screen". Here you can find out the manufacturer and model of your graphics adapter.
- If you have a laptop, then you must also go to the tab "Converter". Here you can see information about the second discrete graphics card.
- After you have found out the manufacturer and model of your video card, you need to go to the official website of the company. Here is a list of the download pages of the major graphics card manufacturers.
- You need to specify the model of your video card and the operating system with bitness on these pages. After that, you can download the software and install it. Please note that it is preferable to install the software for the graphics adapter from the official site. Only in this case will special components be installed that will increase the performance of the video card and allow it to be fine-tuned.
- When you install the software for the graphics adapter and motherboard, you need to check the result. For this we open "Device Manager". Press a combination of buttons Win and "R" on the keyboard, and in the window that opens, write the command devmgmt.msc. After that we press "Enter".
- As a result, you will see a window "Device Manager". It should not contain unidentified devices and equipment, next to the name of which there are question or exclamation marks. If this is the case, then you have installed all the necessary drivers. And if such components are present, we recommend using one of the following methods.
Method 2: Automatic Software Update Utilities
If you are too lazy to search and install all the software manually, then you should take a closer look at programs that are designed to facilitate this task. We reviewed the most popular programs for automatically searching and updating software in a separate article.
You can use any of the described utilities. But we still recommend using DriverPack Solution or Driver Genius. These are the programs with the largest database of drivers and supported hardware. We have already told you about how to use DriverPack Solution.
Therefore, let us tell you how to find and install all drivers using the Driver Genius program. So, let's begin.
- We start the program.
- You will immediately find yourself on its main page. There is a green button in the middle "Start Check". We boldly press on it.
- The scanning process of your computer or laptop will start. After a few minutes, you will see a list of all devices for which you need to download and install software. Since we are not looking for a specific driver, we check all the available items. After that, press the button "Further" at the bottom of the program window.
- In the next window, you will see a list of devices for which drivers have already been updated using this utility, and those devices for which the software still needs to be downloaded and installed. The last device type is marked with a gray circle next to the name. For reliability, just press the button "Download All".
- After that, the program will try to connect to the servers to download the necessary files. If everything goes well, you will return to the previous window, where you can track the progress of the software download in the corresponding line.
- When all components are downloaded, the icon next to the device name will turn green with a downward arrow. Unfortunately, installing all the software with one button will not work. Therefore, select the line with the necessary device and press the button "Install".
- Optionally, create a restore point. You will be prompted for this in the next dialog box. Choose the answer that matches your decision.
- After that, the driver installation process for the selected device will begin, during which standard dialog boxes may appear. In them, you just need to read the license agreements and press the buttons "Further". You shouldn't have any problems at this stage. After installing this or that software, you may be prompted to reboot the system. If such a message appears, we recommend that you do so. When the driver is successfully installed, there will be a green check mark next to the line with the hardware in the Driver Genius program.
- Thus, you need to install software for all equipment from the list.
- At the end, you can scan the computer again to be convincing. If you have installed all the drivers, you will see a similar message.
- In addition, you can check if all software is installed with "Device Manager" as described at the end of the first method.
- If there are still unidentified devices, try the following method.
Method 3: Online Services
