How to view djvu files. What can open djvu. Through browser extensions

Hello, dear readers of the blog site. Probably, you have met on the Internet scanned books in djvu format(their files have the same extension).

Usually, not fiction is distributed in this way on the network, but books containing drawings, graphs, formulas and other things that are quite difficult to digitize using OCR programs.

At first, I thought that this strange djvu () format is a regular set of bitmap images (photos) that resulted from scanning a book. But in this case, the file size would be very large, and we do not observe this.

What is a file with such a mysterious extension and how can it be opened in order to start reading the information enclosed in "déjà vu", and what programs are best used for this. I will try to answer all these questions in this article.

What is a Djvu file

It turns out that djvu was developed about fifteen years ago and is a very successful mixture of test and graphic formats. In principle, when digitizing books, two scenarios are possible:

  1. Perform text recognition on a scanned page and save it using compression algorithms, which allows you to get a very small weight of the final file. The downside is that you lose images, backgrounds, marginal notes, dog-ears, and other things that might be important in some cases. But on the other hand, it will be possible to conduct a full-fledged search using the recognized texts.
  2. You can save scanned texts as pictures, for which such or tiff are suitable. However, the weight of even one scanned page will be excessively high if we want to maintain quality. Well, it will be impossible to search through the texts.

Djvu combines the advantages of the methods described above, while having practically no drawbacks. Format Deja vu can be attributed to text-graphic, which in itself already sounds unusual, but it promises a lot of dividends. Judge for yourself:

  1. The original scanned image is compressed ten times more densely in Djvu than it would be with JPEG, with little to no change in quality. At the same time, jpeg will surely blur both text and graphics, and everything that is possible, and our hero will leave everything in its original form.
  2. An A4 sheet scanned and converted to deja vu will weigh around 50 kilobytes (read about that), if the source was with color graphics (or background), and around 10 kilobytes if black and white. Lepota, and this is taking into account the fact that the scanning was carried out in high resolution 300 DPI. The same file saved in tiff format (without quality loss) would weigh several hundred times more.
  3. The Djvu file contains a text layer that can be fully searched, and if desired, you can leave only it (removing the color mask and background information), which will further reduce the size.

All this is achieved thanks to a rather original approach. I could be wrong, but I think it goes like this:

  1. Separate the text of the page and its background. The algorithm monitors many factors and, with the right settings, can even rip out the text component from the cover of a magazine, where words can also be used as a background.
  2. The text is saved in one bit (black and white) and compressed quite tightly.
  3. Separately, the background is saved, which is compressed a little less efficiently.
  4. Information about the color of the text and illustrations used in the book is also compressed, but using a different algorithm.
  5. As I already mentioned, the Djvu format provides for a separate text field, thanks to which you can search through scanned books.

But the questions of creation and principles of data formation in deja vu files are of interest to us insofar as, and it will be much more interesting to find out how they can be open and read Djvu.

Naturally, for this purpose, special reading programs (readers) are used, which take place both for a computer and for mobile devices based on Android or iOs (ipad, iPhone). It’s convenient, after all, on the way home or to work, to increase your level of education by reading a smart book on your mobile phone.

How to open Djvu - programs for reading on a computer

There are several programs that are focused on working only with deja vu files, and there are a number of universal solutions that allow you to read books in almost any form. There are also Djvu editors that allow you to edit or even create your own masterpieces.

Among Deja Vu readers designed for a computer, it is worth highlighting the following readers:

It fully supports the Russian language and even the “great and terrible” Yandex managed to seize it, forcing you almost by force and by default search in all your browsers:

In general, they make it possible to abandon all this wealth (including), but not everyone pays attention to this when installing a program. Of course, for the same one, all this looks even more intrusive, but the leading search engine of the Runet has also filled all free programs with its add-ons to the very “do not indulge”.

As I mentioned in Djvu a text layer can be wired, so when reading books containing it, you can search by words and phrases.

On the left, WinDjView has a navigator with page thumbnails, and at the top is a toolbar where you can open a new file, change the scale and display type of pages (an endless tape or imitation of a book spread), and also rotate them, if necessary, by an angle multiple of 90 degrees.

Remarkably, this déjà vu reader opens new books in new tabs, which allows you to work with several materials at once in one program window. It is also possible to bookmark and leave comments (from context menu right mouse button). You can use the magnifier from the toolbar and full-screen viewing mode (in this case, pages can be flipped with a simple mouse click).

If you select "File" - "Settings" from the WinDjView program menu, then on the second tab you can set the inversion of colors (for example, in order to read white text on a black background), as well as adjust the brightness, contrast or gamma for better perception of the document in Djvu format.

At the beginning of the article, I mentioned that in déjà vu, the scanned document is broken down into black and white text, background, and foreground color information. So, in WinDjView all this can be visually seen by selecting "view" - "mode" from the menu.

Last current version dates back to 2005 (version 2.0.0.26) and its compatibility with modern operating systems is not guaranteed, although on my Windows Vista it still works, though not as fast as its modern counterpart described just above. It does not require installation and works directly from the folder where you unpacked the archive with the program.

During installation, you need to check the box that you will not use this reader for commercial purposes, so as not to pay for the program.

Well, STDU Viewer will also ask you which file extensions you would like to associate with, except for deja vu.

In principle, this reader does not have something so global that would not be in WinDjView, but ... Firstly, it captivates a huge number of formats, which can be opened and read with this program.

Secondly, a very convenient and thoughtful interface.

Almost all the functionality of the reader is displayed in the form of toolbars located around the entire perimeter of the program window. The place where page thumbnails are usually displayed the book you read, has as many as six tabs located at the bottom.

Not all of them are applicable to Djvu, but still. The same bookmarks that can be arranged in the form of a tree may well replace the missing navigation in your handbook or reference book.

The brightness and contrast settings are also displayed as an icon in the lower right corner, where the buttons for switching the document display mode are also located.

Thirdly, there are some nice functional delights that will help during daily work with STDU Viewer:

And fourthly, this is a huge number of settings that can be made in the STDU Viewer so that this reader is fully suited to your habits and needs.

For example, you can customize (File - Program Settings) even the appearance of the tabs, which, of course, is a trifle, but quite pleasant:

Djvu reader for Android and iOs (iPad and iPhone)

For some reason, I mostly manage to read books on the road, but behind there are always a lot of other, more important and interesting things to do. In this regard, I was faced with the task of downloading some suitable deja vu reader for my favorite iPad, received as a gift from Profit Partner, but also in a compartment with everything - for an Android phone.

At the same time, I try to try all the free options for programs and applications before coming to the conclusion that I have no other option but to part with hard-earned money. Actually, the main candidates for the place of Djvu readers for iOs on the Internet are recommended DjVU Book Reader.

It seems that everything is fine, both reviews and screenshots, but they are asking for it, albeit a small, but still amount of money (169 rubles). I thought that this software did not converge like a wedge and I entered the word Djvu in the search bar in the Apple Store and asked to filter out only free applications.

After testing to open various déjà vu files and evaluating usability and functionality, among the free programs for the iPad, a clear leader emerged - KyBook.

The softinka is unique, in my opinion, because, despite being free, it fully supports EPUB, FB2, PDF, DJVU, CBR, CBZ and audiobooks in MP3, M4A, M4B format.

When reading, the pages turn beautifully (the animation can be customized), there are a lot of settings and functionality, such as creating bookmarks, leaving notes, searching through the contents of the book, etc. things that are available from the top toolbar.

The KyBook reader has unexpectedly many settings:

Including there is a separate group of settings for this reader for PDF and DJVU formats:

In the library of this reader, you can sort books, create shelves for them, move files between them, rename and do everything that is usually required from such programs.

In addition, it is possible to use the applications you have for working with cloud storages such as, or Google drive.

True, by providing access to its files in Dropbox and other clouds, KyBook warns you that it can even change them, which I personally do not really like.

So I Djvu files are thrown into the Dropbox folder on the computer (via Wi-Fi), after which I open the application of the same name on the Ipad and add them to my favorites so that they do not drag on the mobile Internet, which is not always fast and also limited.

I think it would be safer that way.

Now it's time to move on to the question of how to open Djvu on Android. The Internet told me that the best options are two free applications that I still use, because I didn’t have any particular complaints about their work, but I left them both just in case - suddenly some twisted deja vu file open one of them can not.

So I present to you deja vu reader for android:

Good luck to you! See you soon on the blog pages site

The DJVu format is used in digital libraries. This resolution compresses illustrations with loss of quality, but this is necessary to convey the nuances of the source text. In the article, we will analyze in detail why such a size is needed and how to open a DJVu file on a computer.

General description of the DJVu format

Users are often interested in questions about what the format is and how to open a DJVu file. To create such a file, the source (text, picture, diagram) is first scanned, then the DJVu technique is used to compress the picture.

The scan copy is decomposed into three layers: foreground and background, one-bit mask. After that, compression occurs using wavelet technology and the JB2 algorithm. As a result, we get a document with a size of 15 KB.

The file is saved in two versions: conversion with loss of quality and without loss in formats: PNG, JPEG or TIFF. DJVu can be opened in two ways, we will talk about them in more detail below.

History of occurrence

The image conversion technology was developed by Jan LeCun, Leon Bothu, and Patrick Heffner at AT&T Labs between 1998 and 2001. In 2000, the rights to the invention were bought by LizardTech, and in 2009 by Cuminas.

Since the program is developed with open source, it is used on different software. GNU has licensed the DJVuLibre library with tools for encoding and viewing documents.

How and with what to open the DJVu file extension

DejaVu files are available for viewing on Mac OS and Windows platforms. There are two methods to open a DJVu file: install the program or watch it online. Consider software products for each method.

Open DJVu on computer

Format viewers are divided into three types:

  • universal;
  • special;
  • converters.

We present a list of tools than to open a DJVu file on various revisions of Windows.

On Windows 10

The utility will help you open the DejaVu file on Windows 10. To work with a document, you need:

  • download, unpack and run the program;
  • in the upper left corner, click "File", select "Open" (or use the hot key combination "CTRL + O") and specify the location of the document on the computer.

On Windows 7

Now let's see how to open the DJVu format in Windows 7 build. You can't do without special utilities. This program has analogues that can be used to read such files. and the most popular and reliable of them. They are used in a portable format or installed on a desktop. The programs have a clear interface with tabs, standard functions for this type of application (demonstration in a horizontal plane, page rotation, selection by text).

Launching DejaVu documents using this software is easy, you only need to follow two steps.

  1. Go to the "File" section.
  2. Click on the "Open" button and select the required document.

You can make it even easier - go directly from the explorer, but for this you first need to set up an association with the installed software.

On MacOS

Texts, e-books and illustrations saved in the Deja Vu format in this operating system won't open without help third party programs. You will need to download additional software, for example, DjVu Reader.

  1. After installation, run the boot file and press the "⌘ + O" keys.
  2. Through the window that appears, launch the document of interest.

DJVu online

There is nothing easier for a DejaVu file than viewing it in a browser: you do not need to install additional software or manually convert the document. Consider online resources for viewing the DJVu format, how to open what functions are available. The rollMyFile website will help you open DJVu online.

  1. Click the Choose captcha to select a file.
  2. Then click "Open it now".
  3. The document will open in a new window. The program changes the settings, searches the document, scales the size.

Another way to open a DJVu file online is to go to the DJVu Viewer Online service.

Document management is carried out using the buttons on the screen. Of the available functions: scaling and navigating through pages.

What other problems can there be with a DJVu file?

If you were unable to open a document of the specified format online or in a desktop program, archive it and run it in the viewer through the archive. Perhaps the reason is the damage of part of the code, and the archive will fix the problem.

djvu- a relatively recent format for compressing graphic files. Needless to say, the compression achieved by this format allows you to place a regular book in a file of 5-10mb in size! The pdf format is far from this ...

Basically, in this format, books, pictures, magazines are distributed over the network. To open them, you will need one of the programs listed below.

How to open djvu file

1) DjVu Reader

Great program to open djvu files. Supports adjusting the brightness, contrast of the image. You can work with documents in two-page mode.

To open a file, click on file/open .

After that, you will see the content of the document.

A program to open djvu files. One of the most dangerous competitors for DjVu Reader. This program is more convenient: there is scrolling of all open pages with the mouse wheel, faster work, tabs for open files etc.

Program features:

  • tabs for open documents. There is an alternative mode of opening each document in a separate window.
  • Continuous and single-page views, the ability to display a spread
  • Custom bookmarks and annotations
  • Search by text and copy
  • Support for dictionaries that translate words under the mouse pointer
  • List of page thumbnails with custom size

  • Navigation and scrolling with both mouse and keyboard
  • If required, associates itself with DjVu files in Explorer

Open file in WinDjView.

How to create a djvu file

1) DjVu Small

A program for creating a djvu file from images in the format bmp, jpg, gif, etc. By the way, the program can not only create, but also extract from djvu all graphic files that are in a compressed format.

It is very easy to use it. After starting the program, you will see a small window in which you can create a djvu file in a few steps.

1. First, click on the Open Files button (red one on the screen below) and select the pictures that you want to pack into this format.

2. In the second step, choose the location where the created file will be saved.

3. Choose what to do with your files. Document -> Djvu- is to convert documents to djvu format; Djvu Decoding - this item must be selected when you select a djvu file instead of pictures in the first tab in order to extract it and get its contents.

4. Select encoding profile- selection of compression quality. The best option would be an experiment: take a couple of pictures and try to compress them, if the quality suits you, then you can compress the whole book with the same settings. If not, then try to increase the quality. dpi- this is the number of points, the higher this value - the better the quality, and the larger the size of the source file.

5. Convert- a button that starts the creation of a compressed djvu file. The time for this operation will depend on the number of pictures, their quality, PC power, etc. It took about 1-2 seconds for 5-6 pictures. on an average computer today. By the way, below is a screenshot: the file size turned out to be about 24 kb. from 1mb of source data. It is easy to calculate that the files were compressed 43* times!

Another good program to create and extract djvu files. For many users, it seems not as convenient and visual as DjVu Small, but anyway, let's consider the process of creating a file in it.

1. Open image files that you scanned, downloaded, borrowed from friends, etc. Important! First, open just 1 picture of all you want to convert!

Important point! Many cannot open pictures in this program, because. by default it opens djvu files. To open other graphic files, simply put in the file types column the value as in the picture below.

2. Once your one picture has been opened, you can add the rest. To do this, in the left window of the program you will see a column with a small preview of your picture. Right-click on it and select "Insert page after" - add pages (pictures) after this one.

Then select all the pictures you want to compress and add to the program.

3. Now click on file/Encode As Djvu - encode to Djvu.

In the next step, you are asked to specify the location where the encoded file will be saved. By default, you are offered a folder to save the one from which you added image files. You can choose it too.

Now you need to choose the quality with which the program will compress the pictures. It is best to choose it experimentally (because many people have different tastes and it is useless to give specific numbers). Just leave the default first, compress the files - then check if the quality of the document suits you. If not, then increase / decrease the quality and check again, etc. until you find your balance between file size and quality.

The files in the example have been compressed to 28kb! Pretty good, especially for those who want to save disk space, or those with slow internet.
