How to connect to a virtual private network (VPN). An easy way to set up a VPN on a computer and mobile devices How to access the server after installing a vpn

VPN - private virtual computer networks, generalizing the name of a technology that allows you to create virtual networks over other physical networks, for example, a global one. Thanks to the use of a reliable encryption system for information transmitted in such networks, its reliability and security does not depend on the level of security of the underlying web. In VPN, it is possible to use the virtual port of the VPN server, which operates on the basis of the TCP / IP protocol.

The classic scheme allows you to create a virtual connection over the Internet in a point-to-point topology to a server remotely. The latter responds to the request, authenticates it, and sends a response, allowing data to be exchanged between the client and the enterprise's private network. VPN connection gives users the ability to access the network remotely through the Internet channel.

Most providers use VPN technology to provide Internet access services to customers. Today we will consider how such a connection is configured in Windows 7.

Configuration algorithm

Setting up a connection to a remote VPN server begins with the fact that you need to find out the address of the server to which we will connect. You can find it out from your system administrator or provider if you are connected to the Internet using VPN.

  • Open the context menu of the network connection icon and select the second item of the drop-down menu, as shown in the screenshot.
  • Click on the item where you are setting up a new connection.

  • We select the third option from the list of valid connections - to the workplace and click "Next".

  • We choose the formation of a new network connection to the Internet from the options offered by Windows 7.

  • In the next dialog box, enter the Internet address of the server.

It can be an IP address consisting of numbers, or the domain name of the server, which we enter every day to enter various Internet resources. You can get it from the provider that provides Internet access services (by phone, on the official website of the company or in the contract that was concluded when connecting to the network).

Here we also set the name of the connection and, if necessary, allow other users of the Windows computer to use the new connection.

  • Next, enter the username that was assigned to you to authorize and connect to the remote server, and the password for the account.

  • Click "Connect".

Within a few seconds, a request will be sent to the specified server, and when authorized, the Windows 7 computer will be able to connect to the specified source.

  • Close the window or click "Connect Now" to immediately make a new connection.

The creation of a VPN is over, it remains fine tuning connections for ease of use.

  • We visit the control panel item responsible for managing network connections, where we click "Connect to the network".

If the connection has not been established, then you will have to go to "Change adapter settings", call the context menu of the connection created in Windows 7 and select "Connect".

Have become commonplace. True, no one really thinks about what is behind the concept of the type "VPN, setup, use, etc." Most users prefer not to go into the wilds of computer terminology and use standard templates. But in vain. Knowing about such connections can bring a lot of benefits, for example, increase traffic or connection speed, etc. Let's see what a connection to a virtual network really is, using the example of interaction between operating Windows systems on a stationary computer terminal and Android on a mobile device.

What is VPN

Let's start with the fact that VPN setup is impossible without the general principle of understanding the essence of the connection being created or used.

In simple terms, in such a network there is always a so-called router (the same router), which provides computers or mobile devices trying to connect to an existing network with standard additional IP addresses for accessing the local area or the Internet.

At the same time, a virtual network in which there is an activated VPN connection setting perceives any device connected to it with the assignment of a unique internal IP address. The range of such addresses is in the common standard from zero to the value 255.

What is most interesting, even when accessing the Internet, the external IP address of the device from which the request is made is not so easy to determine. There are several reasons for this, which will be discussed below.

The simplest VPN setup for Android

Almost all virtual networks using a Wi-Fi type wireless connection work according to the same principle - assigning free IP addresses from the available range. Not surprisingly, any mobile device can be easily connected to them (but only if it supports the appropriate connection protocols).

However, today any smartphones or tablets based on the Android OS have the option of connecting the same Wi-Fi in their functionality. The network is detected automatically if the device is in its coverage area. The only thing you may need is just entering a password. The so-called "shared" (share) do not require a password at all.

In this case, you need to go to the main settings on your smartphone or tablet and activate the Wi-Fi connection. The system itself will determine the presence of radio modules at a distance of 100-300 meters from the device (it all depends on the model of the distributing router). Once the network has been identified, a menu will appear with all available connections and blocking them. If the network has a padlock icon, it is password protected (however, this will be indicated in the message initially). Know the password - enter.

In public networks, where password entry is not provided, it is even easier. Is the network determined? All. We click on the connection and use. As it is already clear, the VPN setting in this case is not required at all. Another thing is when to use windows settings or another operating system (even mobile) to create a connection or assign the status of a distributing VPN server to a computer terminal or laptop.

Creation and in Windows

With the "OSes" of the Windows family, not everything is as simple as most users think. Of course, they automatically detect a network or connect via Wi-Fi, ADSL, or even a direct connection via an Ethernet network card (subject to the presence of installed equipment). The question is different: if the distributor is not a router, but a laptop or a desktop computer, how to get out of this situation?

main parameters

Here you have to delve into the VPN settings. windows like operating system considered first.

First you need to pay attention not even to the settings of the system itself, but to its related components. True, when creating a connection or using it to the maximum, you will have to configure some protocols such as TCP / IP (IPv4, IPv6).

If the provider does not provide such services automatically, you will have to make settings indicating pre-obtained parameters. For example, when auto-connecting, the fields in the properties of the Internet browser will be inactive for filling (there will be a dot on the item “Obtain an IP address automatically”). That is why you do not have to manually enter the values of the subnet mask, gateway, DNS or WINS servers (especially for proxy servers).

Router settings

Regardless of whether the ASUS laptop or terminal (or any other device) is configured for VPN, access to the network is still common.

For the correct one, you need to go to its own menu. This is done using any Internet browser, provided that the router is directly connected to a computer or laptop.

In the address field, enter the value 192.168.1.1 (this corresponds to most models), after which you should activate the enable function (enable router settings in advanced mode). Usually such a line looks like WLAN Connection Type.

Using VPN Clients

VPN clients are quite specific programs that work like anonymous proxy servers that hide the true IP address of a user's computer when accessing a local network or the Internet.

Actually, the use of programs of this type is reduced to almost complete automatism. The VPN setting in this case, in general, is not important, since the application itself redirects requests from one server (mirror) to another.

True, you will have to tinker a little with setting up such a client, especially if you want to make the maximum available connections in your home virtual network. Here you have to choose between software products. And it should be noted that some applications, the smallest in size, sometimes surpass the commercial products of many well-known brands, for which you also have to pay (and a lot of money, by the way).

But what about TCP/IP?

It goes without saying that almost all of the above settings affect the TCP / IP protocol to one degree or another. To date, nothing better has been invented for comfort and convenience. Even remote anonymous proxies or local data stores still use these settings. But you have to be careful with him.

It is best to contact your ISP or system administrator before changing settings. But one thing must be clearly remembered: even when manually setting the values, as a rule, the subnet mask has the sequence 255.255.255.0 (it can change), and all IP addresses start with the values 192.168.0.X (the last letter can have from one to three characters ).

Conclusion

However, all this is the subtleties of computer technology. The same VPN client for Android can connect multiple smart devices. That's just the biggest snag is whether it is worth using such a connection on a mobile gadget.

If you notice, we didn’t go into the technical details too much. It is rather a descriptive instruction about general concepts. But even that simple example, I think, will help, so to speak, to understand the very essence of the issue. Moreover, with a clear understanding of it, the whole problem will be reduced only to the system settings, which will not affect a particular user in any way.

But here you need to be very careful. Actually, for those who do not know what a VPN connection is, this will not do much. For more advanced users, it is worth saying that it is not recommended to create a virtual network using your own Windows OS tools. You can, of course, use the initial settings, however, as practice shows, it is better to have some additional client in stock, which will always be like an ace up your sleeve.

Here I will try to talk about setting up VPN on android devices.
Many users have never heard of a VPN, and when they saw this item in their phone settings, they simply shrugged their shoulders and moved on. If you know what a VPN is, how it works, then most likely this article will not tell you anything new, I wrote it for beginners who want to protect their online security, bypass censorship and regional restrictions, and maintain their anonymity.
So what is a VPN?
VPN- (eng. Virtual Private Network - virtual private network) - a generalized name for technologies that allow you to provide one or more network connections (logical network) over another network (for example, the Internet).
PPTP VPN- PPTP (Point-to-point tunneling protocol) is a point-to-point tunneling protocol that allows a computer to establish a secure connection with a server by creating a special tunnel in a standard, unsecured network. PPTP encapsulates (encapsulates) PPP frames in IP packets for transmission over a global IP network such as the Internet. PPTP can also be used to establish a tunnel between two local networks. PPTP uses an additional TCP connection to service the tunnel. PPTP traffic can be encrypted using MPPE. Various mechanisms can be used to authenticate clients, the most secure of which are MSCHAP-v2 and EAP-TLS.
My task in this article is not a detailed story about VPN (what it is, how it works, where it came from), you can get the information yourself here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPN
Let's go straight to the phone settings, I did everything on my Samsung Galaxy GT N-7100 Galaxy Note2, MIUI firmware, android 4.1.1, the settings on other devices are similar. First, we need to choose a provider that will provide us with the services of the VPN Service, for myself I chose russianproxy.ru, I chose the “Download” tariff that suits me, after paying you in Personal Area and your personal settings (login, password, server name) will be sent to your e-mail, they look like this:
VPN server address: pptp-l2tp-vpn-russia-1.atomintersoft.com
User: v1111-111111
Password: XXXXXXXXXXXX
Access end date: 2013-01-26 00:00:00
Open phone settings
-> WIRELESS NETWORKS
->Additional...
->VPN
->CONFIGURATION
->Add VPN network

Next, enter, in the fields listed below, the appropriate data:
"Network name" - enter any name
"Type" - select PPTP
"VPN server address" - the name of the server to connect to (check in the Client Cabinet in the My Subscriptions section)
"Enable Encryption (MPPE)" - check the box
Confirm the creation of the connection by clicking the Save button in the lower right corner.
Click on the newly created VPN connection and enter the following details:
"Username" - login of your subscription
"Password" - your subscription password
"Save credentials" - check the box
Click Connect to establish a connection.
If the connection is successful, a key icon will appear in the upper status bar, by clicking on which you will have the following options: view connection statistics (time, traffic)
disconnect the subscription using the "Disconnect" button

I want to tell you more about several programs for working with VPN, which I found in the market.
vpnroot- play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.did.vpnroot is a shareware VPN client, to unlock all functions you need a donation via PayPal, unlike a regular VPN in android, it can reconnect after a connection break, has a widget with with which you can activate a VPN session in one click on the desktop, while it does not have autorun, the author promised to add it in future versions.
DroidVPN- play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aed.droidvpn requires registration on the program website to work, after creating a personal account for a month they give 100mb of VPN traffic, then you have to pay, a penny in general is something about 150 rubles for three months, I don’t understand users who left negative comments on the program ... There are several VPN servers to choose from different countries, for some reason I liked Italian more, you can make the servers change randomly every time, your ip will correspond to the country whose server you have chosen in the settings, which makes it easy to bypass regional restrictions. The program has autorun, can reconnect when the connection is broken.
Orbot: Tor for Android- play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.torproject.android Tor is an open source cross-platform software designed to protect against "eavesdropping" and ensure the confidentiality of personal and business data transmitted in global network. The product ensures complete anonymity of clients when visiting websites, publishing materials, sending messages and working with applications using the TCP protocol. Android platform users have already been given the option to use Tor proxy networks to surf anonymously. Some time ago, a group of researchers from the University of Cambridge released a product called Shadow. The new Orbot app is the official version of the Tor client from the creators of the platform. Many don't know how to set up vpn connection, however, this is not tricky, but requires certain skills. First, let's figure out why such a connection is needed. VPN literally translates as virtual private network. From the name it is clear that it serves to create a tunnel between two computers, through which information is transmitted in encrypted form. Thus, the confidentiality and anonymity of all transmitted information is ensured. Now let's look at the basic steps for VPN settings.
1. Make sure your home computer is properly connected to the World Wide Web.
2. After making sure that the connection is working, go to the Start menu.
3. Select the folder "Control Panel".
4. Find the "Network Connections" folder.
5. Select the link to create a new network connection.
6. In the first window, click on the inscription "Next".
7. Select "Connect to a network at the workplace" and again click on the item "Connection from a virtual network", again the button "Next"
8. In the next window, you need to select an option depending on the type of your connection:
do not dial the number for preliminary connection;
dial a pre-connection number.
9. Enter a name for the new connection.
10. Then you need to enter ip in a special field remote computer or his name.
11. We select users for whom this connection from this computer will be possible.
12. We put, if necessary, an icon opposite the creation of a shortcut on the desktop.
Your computer will then prompt you to connect immediately, but we should refuse this. Select the shortcut of our connection on the main screen and click on it right click mice. Select the "Properties" tab. Specify the connection recovery method depending on the type of network connection. We save the result.
Windows VPN setup completed, now you just need to click on the desktop shortcut or on the icon in the Start menu connections to connect.
  • When choosing a connection protocol, think about how you will use the VPN. The PPTP protocol is known to be fast wireless network, but less secure than L2TP and IPSec. Therefore, if you care about security, use L2TP or IPSec. If you connect to a VPN at work, your employer will likely tell you which protocol to choose. If you are using your own VPN, choose a protocol supported by your ISP.
  • When choosing a VPN provider, think about security. If you want to use a VPN to send documents and emails, or want to stay safe online, choose a VPN provider that offers SSL (TLS) or IPsec encryption. The SSL encryption protocol is the most popular. Encryption is a method to hide data from outsiders. Also, choose a VPN provider that uses OpenVPN for encryption, not PPTP. Several vulnerabilities have been found in PPTP in recent years; however, OpenVPN is generally considered a more secure encryption method.
  • When choosing a VPN provider, think about privacy. Some providers monitor the activity of their customers and may inform the authorities if there is any suspicion. If you want to keep your online activity private, choose a VPN provider that doesn't keep user logs.
  • When choosing a VPN provider, think about VPN bandwidth. It determines how much data can be transferred. Keep in mind that high-quality video and music files are larger and therefore require more bandwidth than text and image files. If you are only going to use the VPN to view and transfer sensitive documents, any VPN provider will provide sufficient bandwidth. But if you want to watch Netflix or play online games, for example, choose a VPN provider that allows you to use unlimited bandwidth.
  • When choosing a VPN provider, consider whether you want to view content that is only available in other countries. When you browse the web, they receive your IP address, which determines your location. If you try to access content in another country, you may not be able to access it due to the IP address because there is no copyright agreement between the countries for that content. Therefore, look for a provider with output servers - in this case, you will have the IP address of the country you need. This will allow you to access content in another country using overseas servers. Choose a VPN provider that has servers in the country with the content you want.
  • When choosing a VPN provider, consider whether you will be connecting to the VPN on a computer or mobile device. If you travel a lot or use your mobile device (smartphone or tablet) a lot, choose a VPN provider that provides a VPN connection for mobile devices or even provides apps that are compatible with your mobile devices.
  • When choosing a VPN provider, think about the kind of support you need. Read reviews and find out about customer support for a particular VPN provider. Some providers provide phone support only, while others can also be contacted via chat or e-mail. Find a provider that offers a convenient customer support experience for you. Also look for reviews (via search engine, for example Yandex or Google) about the provider in order to evaluate the quality of customer support.
  • When choosing a VPN provider, think about how much you are willing to spend. Some VPN providers offer free services (such as Open VPN), but as a rule, in this case, the services (features, bandwidth, support, and so on) will be cut. Since there are many VPN providers, compare the prices and services of some of them. Surely you will find a provider who will provide the services you need at an affordable price.
